The Cruz Family

Ka Remy and Mang Jo served the Cruz family for many years. Mang Jois the family carpenter, and Ka Remyis our maid. They were already working for lola even before I was born, which was before Mang Jo and Ka Remy decided to marry each other. Ka Remy has a unique pet name for Mang Jo, and that is alpahor. It means “sweet potato.” So if other people call their lovers honey, babe, sweetheart, you can start a trend and call each other alpahor.

My Dream Notebook

I used to have a dream notebook. Each dream gets a written account, a colorful drawing, a list of key elements and their equivalent meanings in dream dictionaries, and a short passage where I’d explain my overall interpretation. Sometimes I would read these entries again so that I can see if any of my predictions came true, or if any of my previous dreams were interpreted correctly or incorrectly in light of current events.

My Smile

My mom said that when I was in kindergarten, I was picked to perform a poem in front of the whole school. It was called My Smile. She said I practiced it so many times that I even practiced while I took a bath. I already knew the poem word per word, but I kept on memorizing still.

Fiction: From the Amazons, with Love

The postcard arrived from the land of the Amazons, and it was from Jeremy. He thanked me for sending him there. He said he was really enjoying my post-break-up gift for him.

He loved it there. All the women welcomed his uncomfortable sexual advances. Whenever he felt horny, the love-making hut was always filled with women who cared little about their virginity. He could do it whenever and with whomever he wanted. None of the women felt jealous. It also didn’t matter what kind of insensitivity spewed out from his mouth— they still wanted sex afterwards.
