Internationally renowned artist David Medalla shocked the organizers of Ateneo’s Gawad Tanglaw ng Lahi Award when he disrupted the solemn ceremony by leading an early exodus out of the school’s Leong Hall.
On Nov. 27, the Ateneo de Manila University honored Mr. Medalla with the award, which is given to individuals or organizations that have upheld the Filipino identity through significant contributions in culture and the arts.
The event also celebrated the opening of Mr. Medalla’s exhibit Tuloy Po Kayo, which includes several portraits of foreigners who have made an impact on the Philippines. This is a prelude to another collection where he will paint portraits of Filipinos who made it abroad. The exhibit also includes sand reliefs, paintings inspired by Filipino games and songs, and videos of his performances.
