The humor of this joke relies on seemingly simple structure of the Filipino language, but what the foreigner in the joke didn’t understand is that those two sentences are more complex than he or she has perceived.

Don’t be shocked; Filipinos speak English. From the time we enter school, we learn the language. Most schools teach all subjects (except for Filipino and Philippine history, or sometimes even Philippine history) in English. For some sort of reason though the English word “salvage” is often understood as “was murdered” instead of the proper meaning “to save”. How did this happen?

The Filipina maid went to New York. She walked into a grand mansion and was greeted by her new American boss.

“Hello. It’s nice to meet you,” the American said, “What’s your name?”

The grown woman responds, “My name is Baby.”

“Huh?”

Yes, Filipinos name their babies Baby. Some are also named Girlie, Darling, Boy, Big Boy, etc. The question is why?

Jeeps rage through the streets of Manila, but some of them stay quiet at loading areas, patiently waiting for the whole jeep to be sardined-packed with people.

These stationary jeeps, they know how to fool you. They tease you with a little bit of motion, making you think that, Ay malapit nang umalis ung jeep, hindi na ako bababa, or Ay hindi yata pupunuin ung jeep, maghihintay nalang ako. 

You’re wrong. You’re so wrong.
